UCSF is committed to working with patients, their families, their primary care doctors and referring specialists to diagnose, manage, and treat complicated conditions.

Clinical Resources

UCSF has assembled an unparalleled multi-disciplinary team to diagnose and treat patients with neurological and infectious diseases. Our team is comprised of experts in neurology, infectious diseases, immunology, laboratory medicine, and the basic sciences. The team also meets to review and adjudicate challenging cases and advance scientific discovery to improve diagnosis and treatment for these disorders.

For patients who require hospitalization, UCSF offers top-notch neuro-critical care and neurohospitalist services.

Pediatric Inpatient Transfers

The UCSF inpatient pediatric neurohospitalist team at Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco cares for children with a variety of neuroinflammatory and neuroimmunological conditions. Transfers and urgent clinical phone advice can be obtained through the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Access Center.

Outpatient Services

Infectious Diseases

Our board-certified physicians care for patients with infectious diseases in both the inpatient consult service and the outpatient clinics.

Adults: Infectious Diseases Clinic (Parnassus)
Children: Infectious Diseases Clinic (Mission Bay)

Infections of the Nervous System

Our neurologists specialize in seeing patients with neurologic complications of a variety of infectious diseases ranging from viral encephalitis, complications of HIV-1 infection, coccidiomycosis (valley fever), West Nile virus, JC virus which causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and neurocysticercosis.

Autoimmune and Paraneoplastic Neurological Disorders

The UCSF Multiple Sclerosis Center offers comprehensive care for patients with a variety of neuroinflammatory and neuroimmunological diseases including autoimmune meningitis and encephalitis, transverse myelitis, multiple sclerosis, neurosarcoidosis, vasculitis and neurological complications of systemic inflammatory or neurological disease.

The Memory and Aging Center provides evaluations for patients with rapidly progressive dementias of all kinds, including undiagnosed or atypical dementias.

The UCSF Autoimmune Encephalopathy Clinic cares for patients with autoimmune dementias and related disorders. This clinic is unique in combining neuroimmunology, behavioral neurology and neuropsychology expertise to provide integrated diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Pediatric Neurology

The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Brain Center specializes in caring for children with a wide range of neurological conditions. Our specialists provide evaluations, management, and treatment in the Child Neurology Clinic and the Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center.
